Science @ the Library The Brookings Public Library and the Optimist Club of Brookings are proud to announce that for the third straight year the month of April will feature a hands-on Science exhibit at the library. This year’s exhibit will be Animals as Architects. Animals are amazing architects. They burrow, weave, shape and sculpt. They create comfortable, secure homes out of the resources they find in their surroundings, guided by fine-tuned instincts developed over hundreds of years. Animals as Architects introduces visitors to these skilled craftsmen who work without blueprints, tape measures or T-squares. This exhibit answers some questions like: Why do beavers build dams? And why do moles burrow underground? Visitors learn about the different behaviors and adaptations that allow animals to adapt to their environment and survive as a species. The exhibit includes a number of hands-on activities like –
¨ Nesting like the Birds - enjoy the once in a lifetime opportunity to build your own “human” sized bird nest!
¨ The Matching Game where students can spin the blocks and match the animal with the materials it uses to build its home. This activity teaches about the diversity of materials used by animals to build structures.
¨ Spider Webs - create your own spider web out of loops and pegs or do a crayon rubbing of a spider web to take home!
¨ Termite Mound Model – this is a five foot model of an African termite mound where the face of the mound has been “eroded away” so visitors can study the inside features.
The exhibit opens with a kick-off party on April 3 at 7:00 pm. The exhibit will be open during regular library hours until April 28th. For more information on this or any other children’s program contact Katherine Eberline at 692-9407.
South Dakota Book Awards for ChildrenDid you know that the state of South Dakota has two different reading awards for children’s literature? There is the Prairie Bud Award for students in grades K-3 and the Prairie Pasque Award for students in grades 4-6. The nominees for both these awards were chosen for their quality and potential popularity with children by a panel of educators and librarians. The Prairie Bud and the Prairie Pasque Awards are both “Kid’s Choice” where students read at least 5 of the 15 nominated books in order to be eligible to vote. Voting takes place during the second week of March and the winners of the statewide vote are announced in April during National Library Week. The goal of both of these awards is to encourage students to become enthusiastic, discriminating readers. The Prairie Bud Award was created in 1998 and each year students in K-3rd grade are eligible to vote for their favorite nominated book. This year’s nominees are:
The Prairie Pasque Award was first given in 1987 to Ivy Ruckman for her book, Night of the Twisters. Students in grades 4–6 are eligible to vote for their favorite nominee. This year’s nominated books are:
The books on both of these lists cover a wide rage of styles and genre, including both fiction and non-fiction. The Brookings Public Library has several copies of all of these books, so if your children are looking for something great to read over the holidays, why don’t you come by and check them out!
Birthday Book ClubThe Brookings Public Library is pleased to announce the introduction of our new Birthday Book Program. This is a unique way you can celebrate your child’s birthday in a special way, and at the same time help our library collection to grow. Participation in the program involves a $10 donation per book. For this donation your child may select a new book from the Birthday Bookshelf located in the library. The inside front cover of the book will have a bookplate inscribed with your child’s name. The birthday child will also have the honor of being the first to check out the new book. Children have a special appreciation for books they select to add to the library. They enjoy sharing them with family and friends. This is a wonderful way to commemorate a very special occasion and to help our library maintain a high-quality collection. |
