South Dakota Book Awards

Did you know that the state of South Dakota has two different reading awards for children’s literature? There is the Prairie Bud Award for students in grades K-3 and the Prairie Pasque Award for students in grades 4-6. The nominees for both these awards were chosen for their quality and potential popularity with children by a panel of educators and librarians. The Prairie Bud and the Prairie Pasque Awards are both “Kid’s Choice” where students read at least 5 of the 15 nominated books in order to be eligible to vote. Voting takes place during the second week of March and the winners of the statewide vote are announced in April during National Library Week. The goal of both of these awards is to encourage students to become enthusiastic, discriminating readers.

The Prairie Bud Award was created in 1998 and each year students in K-3rd grade are eligible to vote for their favorite nominated book. This year’s top five titles are:

1.        A is for Must Ox, by Erin Cabatingan  WINNER

2.        Oh No, George! By Chris Haughton

3.        Question Boy Meets Little Miss Know-It-All by Peter Catalanotto

4.        Being Frank by Donna W. Earnhardt

5.       Barnum’s Bones: How Barnum Brown Discovered the Most Famous Dinosaur in the World by Tracey Fern

The Prairie Pasque Award was first given in 1987 to Ivy Ruckman for her book, Night of the Twisters. Students in grades 4–6 are eligible to vote for their favorite nominee. This year’s nominated books are:

1.       Wonder by R.J. Palacio  WINNER

2.       The Matchbox Diary by Paul Fleischman

3.       Dogs on Duty: Soldiers’ Best Friends on the Battlefield and Beyond by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

4.       The President’s Stuck in the Bathtub: Poems About the Presidents by Susan Katz

5.       Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim

The books on both of these lists cover a wide range of styles and genres, including both fiction and non-fiction. The Brookings Public Library has several copies of all of these books, so if your children are looking for something great to read, why don’t you come by and check them out!

Birthday Book Club

The Brookings Public Library is pleased to announce the introduction of our new Birthday Book Program. This is a unique way you can celebrate your child’s birthday in a special way, and at the same time help our library collection to grow. Participation in the program involves a $10 donation per book.

For this donation your child may select a new book from the Birthday Bookshelf located in the library. The inside front cover of the book will have a bookplate inscribed with your child’s name. The birthday child will also have the honor of being the first to check out the new book.

Children have a special appreciation for books they select to add to the library. They enjoy sharing them with family and friends. This is a wonderful way to commemorate a very special occasion and to help our library maintain a high-quality collection.
